Sometimes an urge hits so hard that a regular breathing session isn't enough. That's what SOS mode is for.
SOS is Halto's emergency intervention—designed for crisis moments when you need immediate, intense help.
This guide explains when and how to use it effectively.
What Is SOS Mode?
SOS mode is an emergency feature that provides:
- Intense haptic feedback — shock pattern to break the urge state
- Faster-paced guidance — rapid intervention
- Crisis-level support — designed for your hardest moments
- One-tap access — no setup, instant activation
Think of regular sessions as exercise. Think of SOS as the emergency defibrillator—you hope you don't need it, but it's there when you do.
When to Use SOS Mode
Use SOS When:
The urge is overwhelming
- You're on the edge of relapsing
- Normal techniques aren't working
- You feel like you're losing control
You need immediate intervention
- No time for a full session
- Crisis is happening NOW
- Regular breathing isn't penetrating
You're in danger of action
- Your hand is reaching for the phone
- You're opening forbidden apps
- You're searching for content
Regular sessions aren't enough
- You've tried breathing and it's not working
- The urge keeps rebuilding
- You need something stronger
DON'T Use SOS When:
A regular session would work
- Mild or moderate urges
- You have time to do a full session
- The urge is manageable
As your primary practice
- SOS is for emergencies, not daily training
- Regular sessions build capacity
- SOS should be rare, not routine
To avoid real practice
- Don't use SOS as a shortcut
- Build your foundation with regular sessions
- Reserve SOS for true emergencies
How to Activate SOS Mode
Step 1: Open Halto
Launch the app (or use it if already open).
Step 2: Go to the SOS Tab
Tap the SOS icon in the navigation bar. It's designed to be fast—usually the second tab.
Step 3: Press and Hold the SOS Button
The SOS button is large and prominent. Press and hold it to activate.
Step 4: Experience the Intervention
When activated:
- Intense haptic pulses begin immediately
- Visual cues guide rapid breathing
- The pattern continues as long as you hold
Step 5: Hold Until Calm
Keep holding/using SOS until:
- The urge intensity decreases
- You feel more in control
- The immediate crisis passes
What Happens During SOS
The Haptic Pattern
SOS mode uses sharp, intense vibration patterns:
- Transient "shock" feedback — meant to interrupt
- Irregular patterns — prevents adaptation
- High intensity — designed to be attention-grabbing
This isn't gentle guidance—it's designed to shock your system out of the urge state.
The Breathing Component
SOS may include:
- Faster breathing cycles
- More intense visual cues
- Urgent countdown timers
The goal is rapid parasympathetic activation, not gradual build.
The Psychological Effect
SOS works through:
- Pattern interruption — breaks the urge loop
- Immediate focus demand — attention shifts to the app
- Physical sensation — haptics demand body awareness
- Breathing engagement — even rapid breathing helps
SOS Best Practices
Have Your Phone Ready
SOS only works if you can access it:
- Keep phone nearby during high-risk times
- Know where the app is
- Practice navigating to SOS so it's automatic
Activate Early
Don't wait until you're already acting on the urge:
- At first sign of severe urge, go to SOS
- Better to use it early than too late
- "I might need SOS" = Use SOS
Combine with Environment Change
SOS + leaving the room = even more effective:
- Activate SOS
- Walk away from the trigger environment
- Continue using until urge subsides
- Return only when stable
Follow Up with Regular Session
After SOS resolves the crisis:
- Do a regular breathing session
- This reinforces the technique
- Prevents immediate return of the urge
Don't Rely on It Exclusively
SOS is emergency backup, not primary strategy:
- Build your capacity with regular sessions
- Address underlying triggers
- Use SOS when needed, but work to need it less
SOS Scenarios
Scenario 1: Late Night Crisis
You're in bed, alone, urge hitting hard.
Action:
- Grab your phone immediately
- Open Halto → SOS tab
- Activate SOS
- If possible, get out of bed while using it
- Continue until urge passes
- Consider sleeping elsewhere or with phone in another room
Scenario 2: Trigger Encountered
You accidentally saw something triggering online.
Action:
- Close the triggering content FIRST
- Open Halto → SOS immediately
- Activate and use
- Leave the device/room if needed
- Continue until stable
- Install blockers after to prevent future accidents
Scenario 3: Emotional Overwhelm
Bad day, stress peaked, urge is a coping response.
Action:
- Recognize: urge is escape attempt
- Open Halto → SOS
- Use until immediate urge drops
- Follow with regular session
- Then address the underlying stress (call someone, journal, exercise)
Scenario 4: Almost Relapsed
You found yourself searching, or hand on phone with intent.
Action:
- STOP immediately
- Open Halto → SOS (even with one hand)
- Maximum intensity use
- Leave the environment physically
- Don't return until fully stable
- Call someone if available
After SOS: What Next?
Immediate Actions
- Take a breath — you got through it
- Leave the environment — if you haven't already
- Do a regular session — reinforces the win
- Assess what happened — what triggered this?
Later Reflection
Ask yourself:
- What led to this crisis?
- Could I have intervened earlier?
- What can I change to prevent this situation?
- Do I need additional support?
Pattern Recognition
If you're using SOS frequently:
- Regular practice may not be consistent enough
- Environment needs more friction (blockers, device changes)
- Underlying issues need addressing
- Consider additional support (accountability partner, therapy)
Technical Details
Requirements
- iPhone with haptic engine
- iOS 16.0 or later
- Sound off is fine (haptics work regardless)
Battery Usage
SOS uses haptics intensively:
- May drain battery faster during use
- Keep phone charged
- Worth the battery for emergencies
Accessibility
SOS is designed for crisis moments:
- Large, easy-to-find button
- Simple activation (press and hold)
- No complicated setup
The Philosophy of SOS
SOS exists because recovery isn't linear.
You can do everything right—practice daily, build capacity, understand triggers—and still face moments where the urge is overwhelming.
SOS isn't failure. It's having a tool for your hardest moments.
Using SOS means:
- You're fighting back
- You have a plan for emergencies
- You're committed to recovery
- You're human, and that's okay
The goal is to need SOS less over time. But having it when you need it? That's powerful.
